Shot in October 1990 to celebrate 25 years of Status Quo, Anniversary Waltz is both a welcome addition to the band's canon and a somewhat disappointing journey through one of the group's less inspired eras. By the end of the 1980s, after all, the best ol' boogie band in Britain had very much lost their way, a dilemma which they would not truly solve for another decade. Yet, even though cynics might grumble that a once mighty band was reduced to little more than a showband cabaret turn, still they thunder through a lengthy greatest-hits set with a hunger and a sense of fun that derails every complaint from the outset. Anniversary Waltz is more, however, than simply an in-concert video. In honor of the occasion, the band conveyed an army of fans down to the same holiday camp on the southwest coast of England where they themselves were born, and the disc goes some way toward documenting the events of that particular day. The live footage itself, meanwhile, is intercut with a wealth of other features, arranged over, under, and all around the performance. Unfortunately, there's not much in the way of archive footage (and no sign at all of the track-listed "Pictures of Matchstick Men," although the group's 1991 performance at the BRIT Awards, where they received an Outstanding Achievement gong, is included at the end of the disc). Bonus material, too, is skimpy -- an album discography and bandmember biographies alone add any bang for your buck. But a scrolling band history, photographs, and interviews all leap in and out of view, pieced together with an eye for detail that a lot of other concert films would do well to emulate. ~ Dave Thompson
