British dance band music from the 1930s has a charming, naive quality that casts a spell over listeners who are susceptible to such niceties. Dutton Vocalion's I'm in a Dancing Mood is a peculiarly euphoria-inducing grab-bag of recordings made for the Rex label between April 1935 and July 1937 by Charlie Kunz and the Casani Club Orchestra, featuring vocalists Vera Lynn, George Barclay, Bobby Comber and George Buck. Like virtually all of the swing and dance bands operating in the U.K. at that time, this ensemble relied heavily on material gleaned from North American phonograph records and motion picture soundtracks. "Wanderers" and "Rhythm on the Range" are cast in the Bing Crosby/Gene Autry Hollywood cowboy mold. "Let's Face the Music and Dance," "I'm Putting All My Eggs in One Basket" and a medley of tunes from Swing Time are close covers, nay, bold face impersonations of Fred Astaire. Less Americanized material exists in the form of "Did Your Mother Come from Ireland?" and "Misty Islands of the Highlands," while "The Feller That Played the Pianner" and "The Army Fell for Little Isabel" are silly vaudevillian numbers based firmly in the great tradition of comedic British music hall entertainment. Instrumentally speaking, you'll want to listen for the xylophone solo by Tommy Blades on the otherwise vocal "Life Begins When You're in Love." Truly instrumental records are uncommon in this part of the Charlie Kunz discography. Although with Kunz every song, vocal or otherwise, is a potential medley of two or three different tunes, his eventual specialization as a purveyor of piano-centered instrumental medleys was just beginning to manifest during the mid-'30s. This collection bears two examples of this wordless modus operandi: the fabulous "Kunz Waltz Medley" and a "Piano Medley of Popular Tunes of the Day." Excellent music for serving tea, tarts, cookies, ice cream, crullers, pie and cake. ~ arwulf arwulf
