Photographer: Tim Owen. 1990s hardcore featured many established paths for bands to follow, but a handful of influential acts blazed their own trails by stretching the genre while exploring different takes on the formula. Buffalo's Snapcase was one such band, and their third album, DESIGNS FOR AUTOMATION, builds from their complex rhythmic experiments. Elements of metal, prog, math, and punk collide on songs like the turbulent "Are You Tuned In?" and slashing "Break the Static." And Snapcase studiously avoids macho cliches without sacrificing an ounce of muscle.
