Although Don Friedman has been active since the mid-'50s on the jazz scene and has an extensive discography, both as a leader and sideman, he isn't as well known as he ought to be. This 2004 concert in Salzau, Germany showcases the pianist in a trio with bassist Martin Wind and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington. The chemistry between them is apparent in the extended treatment of "I Hear a Rhapsody," with the leader covering a lot of musical ground in his solo and the drummer sticking to brushes until sharing a series of breaks with the pianist. The trio more than does justice to Chick Corea's "Bud Powell," incorporating a bit of Latin flavor into this tribute to a bop legend. Wind plays arco in Friedman's moving tribute to bassist Scott LaFaro, while his "Half & Half" alternates between uptempo and midtempo, creating plenty of fireworks. Highly recommended! ~ Ken Dryden|
