As part of a company-wide attempt to re-launch the Virgin Records imprint, which had lost the hip cachet it had enjoyed in the '70s and '80s, the label hired rapper/mogul Jermaine Dupri away from his own So So Def imprint to finally give Virgin a definable identity as a hip-hop label. The 2005 compilation JERMAINE DUPRI PRESENTS: YOUNG, FLY AND FLASHY VOLUME 1 is Dupri's mission statement, featuring established artists from the So So Def roster like Da Brat and Dupri himself, and a mix of new signings like Young Capone, whose first single "I'm Hot" starts the record with a Dirty South grind, and Pastor Troy. Judging by the disparate mix of styles on display throughout this 11-track (plus bonus CD-ROM videos) disc, Dupri is smartly keeping his options open rather than pinning Virgin down to one flavor-of-the-month approach. More importantly, his collaboration with Missy Elliot, the thumping dance track "Gotta Getcha," is a sure-fire winner, and the album's undisputed highlight.
