Additional personnel: JM Scattolin (guitars); Virus (keyboards). Hazy Dreams is a Hendrix tribute album that attempts to update Jimi's songs by adding a hard rock and/or rap-rock flavor. The problem is that simply adding a hard rock sheen to a song does little to create interest. Too many of the songs simply turn up the gain on the same old arrangements, and the vocals drag down several of the performances. Songs like "Crosstown Traffic," "Foxey Lady," and "Hey Joe" just get hard rocked up, while the singer of "Wind Cries Mary" is simply trying too hard to show off her chops. "Manic Depression" has some nice tempo changes, but the bad metal vocals sink the tune. "Highway Child" adds sirens and phones ringing to little effect, and the overwrought vocals simply don't work. "All Along the Watchtower" has some great guitar by Steve Lukather, but the terrible added chorus and vocals all but overshadow his work. Arik Marshall also turns in some fine guitar on "Purple Haze," but Sen Dog's rap adds nothing. Oddly enough, it's the two softer songs that fare the best by far. "Castles Made of Sand" plays it fairly close to the original, but it's such a beautiful song and the players simply let that come out. "Little Wing" is drastically remade, using almost none of Jimi's original lyrics. Instead, Ice-T raps entirely new lyrics, but tells the same story over Jimi's music. It's one of the rare cover updates that actually succeeds. ~ Sean Westergaard
