With the sprouting of dozens of musicians and non-musicians looking for that "new electronic sound", it's comforting to be reminded where the true vanguard of the in-vogue started. Having (temporarily) shed his rock-star skin, Fripp's forays with ambient cohort and friend Eno suddenly seem pertinent and truly groundbreaking.
NO PUSSYFOOTING and EVENING STAR were critical and commercial lead weights in the mid-'70s, sunk to the bottom of the cutout bins. Now both records are looked back upon fondly--and rightly so--as a distinct beginning of contemporary ambient music. This remastered collection sports Fripp's trademark electric glacial sojourns at play against Eno's looped lock-grooves. Of particular interest to collectors are four unreleased tracks, taken from an aborted third collaboration, which link F & E's hypnotic mantras to some decidedly Kraftwerkian percussive sequences. THE ESSENTIAL FRIPP & ENO now seems more necessary than ever.|
