Full title: The Life And Times Of Country Joe & The Fish (From Haight-Ashbury to Woodstock).
Country Joe & The Fish: Joe McDonald (vocals, guitar); Barry Melton (guitar, kazoo, background vocals); David Cohen (guitar, organ, harpsichord, calliope); Bruce Barthol (harmonica, bass, tambourine); Gary "Chicken" Hirsh (drums, percussion).
Additional personnel: Mark Kapner (keyboards); Paul Armstrong, Doug Metzner, Peregrine Pickle, Mark Ryan (bass); Richard Saunders, Greg Dewey (drums); Robin McDonald (percussion).
Recorded between 1965 & 1969.
The title is actually something of a misnomer; the Fish certainly played at the Fillmore West in Haight-Ashbury a lot, but they were actually based in Berkeley, which accounts for the fact that they were by far the most politically oriented of the hippie bands of the period. In any case, this is a nice anthology of their best songs, about half of which appear here in previously unreleased live versions.
Appropriately, the whole thing is bookended by two different takes on their antiwar classic "Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag." The first is a folky run through recorded in a friend's living room in 1965 before fame and fortune; the second is onstage at Woodstock, a performance that would be the band's peak.
