Based in Chicago and influenced a little bit by Bill Evans (although she has her own sound in general), Daugherty is also a talented composer, as witness her nine originals on this well-rounded release. The witty and circular "Out of Round" and the New Orleans parade feel of "Harold's Tune" are among the highlights. In addition to the pianist's core trio, the most impressive sideman is Mitch Paliga, particularly on soprano. Overall, this is an impressive debut and a strong step forward for Jo Ann Daugherty. ~ Scott Yanow
