Harry Belafonte's approach to folk music has always been intelligent, confident, and executed with a firm grasp of artful arrangement, and he almost single-handedly brought world music into the commercial pop arena with the Irving Burgie-composed "Day-O," a song that has become synonymous with the West Indies even though it was composed in Harlem. "Day-O," unfortunately, isn't on this collection, but there are other graceful gems here like Belafonte's versions of "Scarlet Ribbons" and "The Fox" as well as the undeniably infectious faux calypso romp "Hold 'Em Joe," enough anyway to make this set well worth a listen. ~ Steve Leggett|
