Soren Siegumfeld's String Swing is an unusual collage of different styles within what seems to a suite, featuring accordion master Richard Galliano and the infectious vocals of Josefine Cronholm. His music grows slowly upon the listener, particularly if attention is paid to his somewhat offbeat lyrics, which aren't always in English. The leader, who mostly plays alto sax, sticks to providing a bit of percussion in "So It Better Be," an amusing tango, while "Blue Hat" and "The Stolen Alphabet" are a bit of gypsy swing a la Django Reinhardt. Gato Barbieri's "Last Tango in Paris" showcases Siegumfeld, who has a dryer sound more akin to that of Paul Desmond, though the funky "Orlando Superstar" is the oddest track at all, with hand percussion and a prominent role for Jacob Fischer's dobro. ~ Ken Dryden
