Former Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock must have been very content with the direction of his 2000 solo set, Open Mind, because he sticks closely to its sound and approach on his 2005 follow-up, On Something. Longtime Sex Pistols fans expecting the kind of venomous punk rock displayed on Never Mind the Bollocks will once more be in for a bit of a surprise. Matlock and company hone in on a style not too far from Keith Richards' work with his sporadic solo outfit, the X-pensive Winos (albeit with a rougher edge), especially on such selections as "Piece of the Action" and "White Knuckle Ride." And as with his previous solo outing, Matlock isn't afraid to inject some melody into the proceedings as well, as evidenced by "On the Horizon." On Something shows that the most clean-cut Sex Pistol is certainly not the punk he was back in 1976, but rather a respectable rocker in the bar band mold. ~ Greg Prato
