Perhaps more renowned as a performer in films and nightclubs than as a recording artist, singer Lena Horne nonetheless participated in many studio sessions during the 1940s and '50s, and this excellent 22-track Bluebird collection presents many of her best songs from the era. During the early '40s, Horne's striking beauty earned her plenty of attention, but these tunes proved that the Brooklyn-born vocalist had considerable musical talent as well.
On tracks such as "Don't Take Your Love From Me" (recorded with clarinet legend Artie Shaw) and her signature number, "Stormy Weather," Horne's clear, dulcet voice rings out like a bell and glides delicately over the orchestral backing. Other highlights of this well-selected compilation include Horne's vibrant renditions of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "People Will Say We're In Love" and Mercer & Arlen's "One For My Baby (And One More For The Road)," songs that exemplify the singer's amiable, easy-going charm.
