The Runaways, a British production duo, have created an album's worth of vintage hip-hop beats full of jazz, soul, and R&B references for American MCs to rhyme over. In a truly trans-Atlantic proposition, the Runaways issued an olive branch of sorts to the rivalry in hip-hop's underground.
To the producers' credit, they succeed in including a number of talented MCs, including Masta Ace ("Express Delivery"), Dilated People's Iriscience ("Pounds 4 Dollars"), J-Zone ("You Don't Understand") and female MC Tye Phoenix ("Reflections"). The beats are heavily textured--featuring horns, additional percussion (thumb piano, triangle, bells), and scratches--and are melodic and smooth, which sets this collection apart from the sounds, such as G-Funk, Dirty South bounce, and RZA's East Coast gothic pall, that currently dominate U.S. hip-hop.|
