Consisting of 48 tracks that each clock in at around one minute, FILMWORKS V (the score for the film "Tears of Ecstasy" by Oki Hiroyuki) finds John Zorn applying some of Ennio Morricone's thematic tricks of the trade while remaining as experimental as ever. Although the trademark bursts of noise are occasionally present, most songs skillfully avoid classification by blending elements of rock, ambient, jazz, industrial, and world music together into intriguing hybrids. The ensemble Zorn has assembled for these compositions is particularly effective, with Marc Ribot and Robert Quine both providing their distinct guitar sounds, Cyro Baptista manning a seemingly endless arsenal of percussion, and Zorn himself on alto sax, prepared piano, and samples. Despite the brevity of each song, the reoccurrence of musical themes creates a score of multiple song threads that under Zorn's adventurous hand becomes one of his best, and strangest, soundtracks.
