Bill Laswell is perhaps best known as a producer (everything from African pop to Motorhead) and as a ground-breaking improvisatory bassist (with John Zorn, Sonny Sharrock). Here, on the completely solo album INVISIBLE MEANS, Laswell does everything, especially building layers upon layers of electric bass and electronic treatments/alterations of the sounds he coaxes from his instrument. On "Oceans Of Borrowed Money," Laswell treats the bass as a very deep-voiced guitar, conjuring entrancing and ominous folk-like melodies. "Night Air & Low Frequency" is ambient dub, a study in contrast: eerie, atmospheric, ethereal electronic sounds glide over and intermingle with an almost chant-like dub-reggae rhythm--the effect is both becalming and darkly fascinating. INVISIBLE DESIGN is an album of dense, enigmatic textures and evocative soundscapes--perfect listening for rainy days and for those listeners who like their ambient music to have teeth.
