Lee "Scratch" Perry cuts an impressive figure in contemporary pop and reggae: part innovative producer, part Mr. Wizard, the eccentric Perry has influenced and worked with Bob Marley, the Clash, and Mad Professor. (The Beastie Boys, Tricky, and Squarepusher credit him as an inspiration as well.) CHAPTER 2 collects his work as producer and performer, and serves as a "bridge" between two distinct Perry periods: the earlier Upsetters period (more earthy and roots reggae) and the Black Ark (Perry's name for his studio) period, where Perry (with access to improved technology) came into his own as a master manipulator of sound. The tracks range from the basic ("Peace") to the trippy-bizarre ("Sunshine Showdown", "Dr. Who"). CHAPTER 2 is a CD-shaped time machine, where the listener can visit some lesser-known gems of reggae and sample the mad brilliance of one of its most significant practitioners.|
