IN THE BEGINNING is a better than average compilation of mid-period Bob Marley and the Wailer's material. It was recorded for a variety of producers, in a variety of styles, including gospel in the traditional "This Train" and "ThankYou Lord."
"Jah Is Mighty" is closer to the contemporary perception of the Wailers, with conscious lyrics sung with the band's usual impeccable harmonies. Though in general the Bob Marley presented here is a world away from his future incarnation as a touchstone for world music and Rastafarian consciousness, there are enough traces of his future direction in cuts like "Turn Me Loose" for IN THE BEGINNING to be a fruitful listen for Marley completists.
