A virtual who's who of Brit-folk from the revival of the late '50s, led by Ewan MacColl (represented here by "Four Loom Weaver") to a young generation coming into its own, spearheaded by Eliza Carthy, who appears both as a solo artist and as part of Waterson:Carthy, whose "When I First Came to Caledonia" makes for a wonderful opening. Even Richard Thompson -- not strictly a folkie for many years, but still influenced by traditional music -- puts in an appearance, as does the sublime Nic Jones, whose career was curtailed in 1982 by a car crash. Scotland has the Battlefield Band and Dick Gaughan, while Ireland's Four Men & a Dog stand up for the Emerald Isle. The emphasis, however, is firmly on English music, which is understandable since that forms the backbone of the Topic catalog. It's a pleasure to hear the lilting tones of Shirley Collins, surely one of folk's most underrated vocalists, alongside June Tabor and Maddy Prior -- in fact, the only female folk singer of note not included is Anne Briggs. But it could hardly be an English folk album without the presence of Martin Carthy, the man who's symbolized the genre over recent years; not only is he here solo, but also as part of the family unit Waterson:Carthy and the adventurous Brass Monkey. Some great songs, performed beautifully, and an excellent introduction to a style that deserves to be more widely heard. ~ Chris Nickson
