Los Angeles-born Lupillo Rivera is a rising talent of Norteno music. Though his sound is quite traditional (he specialized in the corrido, a folk-ish, story-song style that often employs a waltz beat), Rivera's success is undoubtedly aided by his image. Eschewing the folk costumes and wide sombreros of many traditional Mexican performers, Rivera appears on his album covers in a tie and a three-piece suit, with his classic good looks on prominent display. (Any fan site will show that Rivera is quite popular with the ladies.)
Yet Rivera's talents are more than skin deep. Known as "El Toro del Corrido" (the bull of corrido), Rivera has a rich, strong baritone that resonates in these dramatic narrative songs perfectly, fairly bowling listeners over with his performances. Fans of Rivera's previous work will find more to love on EL REY DE LAS CANTINAS. The instrumentation is still classic Norteno (driven by accordion and horns) with rhythms that range from marches to waltzes to polkas. Rivera's focus on the corrido means there isn't much high-octane dance music here. Instead, EL REY is a record that encourages listeners to relax, listen, and sing along.
