"This DVD is not authorised by Oasis, their management or their record company. It contains no original music by Oasis." So reads a disclaimer in small print on the back of the DVD package. What Sibling Rivalry does contain is a 66-minute biographical documentary about the band led by Noel and Liam Gallagher featuring interviews with friends, musical associates, members of tribute bands, and biographer Paolo Hewitt. The Gallaghers themselves are glimpsed in still photographs and a few brief video excerpts, some of which are repeated frequently. Visually, a large part of the film is made up of generic footage, including shots of people (but not the members of Oasis) from the chest down playing guitars, audiences in clubs, appropriate outdoor scenes, etc., when the camera is not focused on one of the interview subjects. Musically, the film is filled with non-Oasis material by obscure performers that swells or ebbs on the soundtrack as needed. Oasis' story, from the band's beginnings in Manchester, England, to its national and international success, is told well (assuming the viewer can make out all the different British accents), but the lack of any actual music or performances by the group itself and the spare use even of visual depictions hampers this as a satisfying effort. (The special features include an extensive discography even listing many bootlegs.) ~ William Ruhlmann
