Producer Nils Winther's ambitious series of jam sessions follows in the footsteps of the legendary Norman Granz, though Winther's affairs tend to be less showy and more focused on co-operation, even though the solos are first rate. Three alto saxophonists, Dick Oatts, Jon Gordon, and Billy Drewes, who have likely played together in various combinations over the years in New York City, are accompanied by pianist Andy LaVerne (who chose the personnel), bassist Essiet Essiet, and drummer Sylvia Cuenca. The opening track is a compelling workout of Sonny Rollins up-tempo blues "Tenor Madness," followed by Oatts' catchy Native American-flavored "Alto Trinity." The ballad medley showcases each altoist in an individual feature, while rousing takes of two old warhorses, "On Green Dolphin Street" and "What Is This Thing Called Love" are full of energy. There may not be a load of surprises in this edition of Steeplechase's jam session series, but there is never a dull moment. ~ Ken Dryden|
