Assembled in conjunction with the BBC television series of the same name, the two-disc Soul Deep: The Story of Black Popular Music features 39 soul classics drawn largely from the music's '60s heyday -- this is almost solely a collection for listeners with little or no soul records in their collections, as most if not all of the material will be familiar to anyone who's ever tuned into an oldies station. That said, as a primer it does its intended job nicely, balancing landmarks from the Motown and Stax vaults with smash hits from rival labels -- with only 39 tracks, any number of classics fail to make the cut, but it's equally difficult to quibble with those that did, and as a balanced, thorough examination of soul music's golden age, it's one of the better overviews on the market. Highlights include James Brown's "Cold Sweat," Fats Domino's "Blue Monday," Fontella Bass' "Rescue Me," and James Carr's "At the Dark End of the Street." ~ Jason Ankeny
