Columbia/Legacy's JAZZ MOODS series compiles recordings by jazz artists according to a musical theme. With his breathy tone, sensual phrasing, and light, restrained approach to playing, Chet Baker is perhaps the perfect candidate for the COOL installment. This collection finds Baker in typically "cool" form, whether he's stretching out with saxophonist Paul Desmond and guitarist Jim Hall on "Concierto de Aranjuez" or revisiting "My Funny Valentine," one of his signature tunes.
These recordings are from surprisingly late in Baker's career (culled from his live and studio CTI albums cut in 1974 and 1975). However, his playing is as nuanced and lyrical as ever, and his voice--particularly on "She Was Too Good to Me"--is still quite evocative and agile, with its textured, weather-worn quality adding charm. On several tracks, Baker is reunited with baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan, the man who--alongside Baker and Miles Davis--helped put cool jazz on the map. This is a fine compilation for candle-lit dinners, late-night relaxing, and--above all--for appreciating Baker's singular talents.
