Let's face it, the only reason why Society One may stand out from the overly crowded nu metal pack is because of outspoken leader, Matt "The Lord" Zane, who used to be a director of porn movies (and for running the Matt Zane Productions film company). But now his main focus appears to be fronting the very Marilyn Manson-esque sounding Society One, who received the DVD treatment in 2008 with Fearing the Exit. A mixture of live performances, interviews, pictures, and promo videos abound throughout, and Zane is straight out of the Iggy/Marilyn/G.G. school of frontmen -- confronting the audience, baiting the audience, ridiculing the audience, etc. And if that isn't enough for you, how about the March 2004 performance included here -- in which Zane performs "suspended" high above the stage with hooks in his back (no joke!) during the first few songs. The music may not be all that memorable, but you have to give Zane credit for showcasing his pain threshold during the performance. With Marilyn Manson having stopped playing clubs a long time ago, fans of shock rock -- with an emphasis on the shock part -- still have Society One to get up close and personal with, as evidenced throughout Fearing the Exit. ~ Greg Prato|
