DJ/Producer Krust cut his teeth as part of the outfit that brought drum-and-bass the closest to the masses, Roni Size's ubiquitous collective Reprazent. Krust was also instrumental in the successful sounds of NEW FORMS. Though the expectations for CODED LANGUAGE were rather lofty, Krust delivers the goods with a sound that straddles the line between primal and accessible. Though his grooves will appeal to fans of Roni Size, Krust manages to forge a new identity for himself. The music on CODED LANGUAGE is both infectious and appealingly complex. Listeners can get equally lost in the album's rhythms on the dance floor or when under the shelter of headphones. What truly makes the record come together is Krust's savvy choice of collaborator, the vocalist Morgan. The signer lends a perfectly off-balance counter to the pulsating breakbeats. Her dark and displaced smooth growling purr hovers in the realm of Shirley Bassey (or perhaps even Maria Muldaur), suggesting some twisted and stench-filled back-alley dive of the '60s or the '90s. Tracks like "Re-Arrange" could twist and turn for eternity without eliciting impatience in all but the uninitiated. In CODED LANGUAGE, Krust breaks breakbeat into new territory and will certainly break it to new audiences.
