Vicente Fernandez's image may suggest the Mexican musical stereotype; dressed in a mariachi costume that includes a giant sombrero and richly adorned jackets, he often looks like a Hollywood version of a South-of-the-Border musician. Make no mistake, however, Fernandez is the real thing. Starting with his frequent television appearances in the 1960s, he has been one of Mexico's most popular entertainers, his concerts often attracting crowds in the tens of thousands.
Y SUS CORRIDOS CONSENTIDOS is an album of story-songs. Fernandez is known for his extraordinarily passionate delivery, so the romanticism and mythic subject matter of this material is perfectly suited for his booming vocals and hyper-dramatic interpretive style. The singer's music is classic old-time ranchero, complete with staccato trumpet blasts and thumping guitarron (a large-bodied Mexican gut-string bass guitar). Most of the tracks here are danceable mid-tempo numbers, with a few peppy barn-burners ("Juan Charrasqueado") and slow waltzes ("El Martes Me Fusilan") thrown in for good measure. In each case, Fernandez gives the songs his all, wringing out every ounce of emotion from the lyrics.
