Some people have so much music inside them that they need more than one vehicle for it--take Robert Schneider, best known as the leader of the Apples in Stereo. While the Apples have distinctive 1960s inclinations (the mid-'60s classics of the Beach Boys, Beatles, and Zombies, chiefly), Schneider's Marbles project looks to the '80s Top 40 New Wave pop-rock of the Cars, Gary Numan, and Berlin for inspiration, along with a few nods to the '70s.
Primarily a solo album, with Schneider playing nearly all the instruments, EXPO is a treasure-trove of hazy vocals, sharp melodic hooks, cozily comforting choruses, and adorably affected synthesizer sounds. "Hello Sun" is the best, most Beatlesque song Electric Light Orchestra never created, while the somewhat melancholy "Move On" and the bouncy "Circuit" will likely revive fond dance-floor memories of the Buggles, OMD, and Soft Cell. But fear not, Apples fans, Schneider is not going completely '80s on you, as the slightly psychedelic rainy-day pop of "When You Open" attests.
