Paul Schutze is one of the consummate electronic sound composers of recent memory. APART's eclectic nature is demonstrative of Schutze's wide stylistic range and surplus of ideas. On this two-disc set, the first disc finds Schutze toying with everything from introspective anti-fusion out of the Miles Davis/Headhunters axis to dark ambient drones and elephantine data streams.
In "Rivers of Mercury," Fender Rhodes facsimiles float on liquid cymbals, while "The Sleeping Knife Dances" is a ritualistic ethnic forgery with a demonic vibe and sinister electronic undertones. The second CD has just four lengthy tracks, three of which are different entrees into Schutze's idea of "Sleep," imbued with stark, ringing metallic tones that eat at the subconscious much like Thomas Koner's chilly sound tundras. Certainly one of Schutze's most satisfying releases.
