As its title indicates, this compilation collects the first published recordings of the early-1980s U.K. avant-garde trio Scritti Politti, before the band's singer, Green Gartside, effectively turned the name into a solo act, moved to the U.S., and fused his early artistic and political leanings with R&B, disco, and hip-hop. With its jagged, angular guitar; serpentine, atonal bass lines; and pseudo-reggae drumming, the band's first single, "Skank Bloc Bologna," is a world away from its later smooth, sophisticated dance records like "Wood Beez" or "The Word Girl."
That song's off-kilter approach is echoed both musically and lyrically by many of the other cuts here, particularly the wobbly skank of "Is and Ought the Western World," the fractured disco polemic of "Bibbly-O-Tek," and the stuttering, tribal "Messthetics," with only the rippling, softly pulsating beauty of "The Sweetest Girl" hinting at Gartside's future direction.
