Both the name of the group and its debut CD make a confident and uncompromising statement: "we are the authority of the mountain, the voice of duranguense." Barely noticeable on the charts only a few years before, la Autoridad de la Sierra's 2005 release 100% Autoridad Duranguense marked the sky-rocketing popularity of this style hailing from the rural Mexican province of Durango. Consistently placing in the Top Ten Latin albums and Top Five in the regional Mexican category, according to Nielson Soundscan, la Autoridad have made themselves a mainstay of the style and beloved by her fans, be they in Mexico or the heavily Mexican-populated Midwestern United States. The group formed in 2004, in Chicago, the U.S. cradle of the style, due to the large and growing Mexican population in that city. Though suffering from shockingly low production value, the songs on 100% Autoridad Duranguense are undeniably memorable. The vocal performances range from unremarkable to genuine and heartfelt. Considering the youth of both the group and style in general, this album will looked to for years to come as a landmark. As bold as the name might sound, they must have been right. ~ Evan C.
