There's no denying the massive appeal of songs about drinking -- Jimmy Buffett probably wouldn't have a career if not for the subject (which, come to think of it, is a persuasive argument for reinstating prohibition). But anyway -- Rhythm & Booze: 25 Shots of Vintage R&B compiles more than two dozen whiskey-soaked roadhouse classics from the 1950s, culled mostly from EMI-affiliated labels like Imperial and Aladdin. This is R&B at its most raw and raucous, evoking a near-mythical realm of backwoods barrooms populated by bad men and loose women. Not the most original idea for a compilation, but endlessly entertaining nonetheless -- no dive bar's jukebox should be without it. Highlights include J.B. Lenoir's "Give Me One More Shot," Floyd Dixon's "Wine Wine Wine," La Verne Ray's "Drunk, That's All," and Amos Milburn's "Let Me Go Home, Whiskey." ~ Jason Ankeny
