Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn (the music and voice, respectively, behind EBTG) have been recording since the early 1980s, they have moved from bossa nova to acoustic rock to lush, orchestral pop to drum-and-bass and beyond. Not only have EBTG adapted successfully to the changing trends of the music industry, they have retained a consistently individual sound and sensibility. Since Thorn's vocal turn on Massive Attack's PROTECTION (1995) and EBTG's own 1995 hit, "Missing," the duo have been recognized as prime movers in electronica and DJ circles, and it is this aspect of EBTG that ADAPT OR DIE addresses.
Though Watt has been involved in numerous remix and production projects over the years, ADAPT OR DIE contains compositions written by Watt and Thorn and remixed by an array of guests. DJ Jazzy Jeff's treatment of 1996's "Mirrorball" kicks off the set, with Brad Wood's dreamy, trip-hop version of "Single" and Kevin Yost's disco-fied take on "Five Fathoms" being additional highlights. Thorn's sultry, diva-on-the-nod vocals dominate here, and the pair's breezy, sophisticated vibe is still in intact, yet the remixes add depth and dimension to the tunes, making a perfect soundtrack for club-going, as well as headphone immersion.|
