Born in New Mexico and based in New York, singer/songwriter/guitarist Raul Midon has a sound that combines the R&B and soul of Stevie Wonder with the potent folk of Richie Havens. (Wonder actually contributes harmonica to the gentle "Expressions of Love" here) Blind from birth, Midon approaches his acoustic-guitar playing with added tactile sense, creating a percussive-yet-melodic sound that is immediately engaging and perfectly complements his high, clear tenor voice. Not content to settle too much into any one style, Midon conjures up a reggae vibe on "Keep on Hoping" (a duet with Jason Mraz), tips his hat to James Taylor on "Sittin' in the Middle," and belts out "I Would Do Anything" over a dense array of Afro-Cuban percussion. The dynamic STATE OF MIND is a bold, assured album by a charismatic and promising performer.
