Like most sequels, this two-CD set picks up where its predecessor left off, opening with Jerry Goldsmith's end-title music from the first season of the series. This disc continues with a second suite from the original pilot episode ("The Vulcan Affair"), providing another ten minutes of astonishingly good music from that debut. Morton Stevens and Walter Scharf (the grand old man of the series' composers, going back to the '40s) are represented along with Goldsmith from the first season. More of the second, third, and fourth seasons' music is also here, some of it amazingly familiar and all of it highly rewarding -- the scripts for The Man From U.N.C.L.E. may have been uneven after the show's second season, but the producers never skimped on the music. Indeed, a significant part of this double-disc set is devoted to music that was written and arranged for the show but never actually used, and it's all worthwhile. All of it will be a delight for fans of the series or television-music collectors. For 40 years, one could only wonder why the original music tracks from the series weren't released -- the notes on the series explain that (it was all a result of the series not being an instant hit and MGM Records not being willing to take a chance) -- and now here's the motherlode, in superb sound as well. ~ Bruce Eder
