Crazy In Alabama

Set in Alabama and Los Angeles in the summer of 1965, Crazy In Alabama boasts an eclectic collection of music, both in Mark Snow's background score, which moves from contemplative piano- and guitar-based orchestral cues to bluesy pieces and jazz, and in its imported pop music, which includes Xavier Cugat and His Orchestra's swinging "One Mint Julip" and Little Richard's rocking "Lucille." Some of the tracks are ringers: Carole King's "Like Little Children" certainly sounds like a mid-1960s song and recording, but it is previously unreleased; and Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" hadn't been released yet in the summer of 1965. (It came out toward the end of the year and made the charts in January 1966.) And then there's Sybil's recording of "We Shall Overcome," which isn't really in the film at all. This is one of those soundtrack albums that doesn't make much sense outside of a film that obviously has contrasting moods. ~ William Ruhlmann|
