The Chet Baker entry in Columbia's LOVE SONGS series draws from two periods 20 years apart. The early material is from 1954's CHET BAKER & STRINGS and sports arrangements by Marty Paich and Johnny Mandel. The swelling strings on Rodgers and Hart's "I Married an Angel" and Gershwin's "Love Walked In" provide a lush backdrop to Baker's breezy, laconic horn lines. The other period dates from 1974, and includes tracks from the album SHE WAS TOO GOOD TO ME, and from Baker's reunion the same year with his West Coast cohort Gerry Mulligan, documented on CARNEGIE HALL CONCERT.
The later tracks feature Baker's breathy, guileless vocals, which, with their understated charm, are almost as powerful as his trumpet playing. Baker is backed by strings again on the '74 studio album (and flanked by the great lyrical alto saxophonist Paul Desmond), while the Mulligan reunion has him working with a small combo, reprising signature tunes, including the lovely "My Funny Valentine" and "There Will Never Be Another You." Though CHET BAKER SINGS still takes the cake as one of the most romantic discs of all time, this compilation does a fine job of representing the trumpeter's heart-tugging, romantic style.
