A string quartet serves as harmonic accompaniment to the soloists and is heard as a solo voice unto itself, much like a horn player. There's a lot of fast and furious playing here, the two longest of the four tracks, "Bird Says" and "A Little Booker" showcasing the musicians' ability to really burn. Perhaps the most endearing selection, however, is the title track which is a Scott Joplin tune arranged by Max Roach's daughter, Maxine, for the string quartet minus the jazz group.
