Personnel: Misha Mengelberg (piano), Steve Lacy (soprano saxophone), George Lewis (trombone), Arjen Gorter (acoustic bass), Han Bennink (drums). Recorded at Barigozzi Studio, Milan, Italy on July 2-3, 1984. Includes liner notes by A.B. Spellman. All music written by Herbie Nichols. Herbie Nichols was one of the greatest composers and improvisers of the 20th century: a virtuoso pianist, a master of theme and variation/call and response, and one of the few composers in jazz (Monk comes to mind), able to fully integrate the drums into the fabric of the harmony and melodic line. That he fell between the cracks of history almost completely unknown, dead of leukemia at the age of 44, is one of the enduring tragedies in American music, rectified in part by the loving arrangements and interpretations of this all-star quintet on CHANGE OF SEASON. Tributee: Herbie Nichols. Personnel: Misha Mengelberg (piano); Steve Lacy (soprano saxophone); George Lewis (trombone); Han Bennink (drums). Liner Note Author: A.B. Spellman. Recording information: Barigozzi Studio, Milan, Italy (07/02/1984/07/03/1984). Photographer: Mirko R. Boscolo. Arranger: Misha Mengelberg. After recording an album (Regeneration) split between Herbie Nichols and Thelonious Monk compositions, pianist Misha Mengelberg decided to devote a full project to the unjustly neglected Nichols. As with the earlier set, this date also includes soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy and drummer Han Bennink, but this time with trombonist George Lewis and bassist Arjen Gorter. For the first time, seven of Nichols' songs (including "House Party Starting," "Hangover Triangle," and "Change of Season") were performed by a medium-size group, rather than just Nichols' trio, and one can appreciate the formerly unheard colors in the pianist's nearly lost music. It is also a particular pleasure hearing Lewis and Lacy improvising on these challenging, yet fairly straight-ahead pieces. A gem. ~ Scott Yanow
