Can't Get Away from This Dog gathers 20 previously unreleased Rufus Thomas recordings from the Stax vaults. Stylistically, fans won't find any surprises -- this is still hard-hitting, hard-driving Memphis soul -- but they'll find a couple of hidden treasures, such as versions of "Wang Dang Doodle," "Reconsider Baby" and "Barefootin'," as well as alternates of "Walking the Dog," "Jump Back" and "Can Your Monkey Do the Dog?" Some of Thomas' original material is a little thin -- there's only so many times you can work the word "dog" into a song title, after all -- but this is a surprisingly successful collection of rarities that will not only satiate diehards, but will entertain casual fans as well. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine|
