The six selections on Motion are all free improvisations. Rodrigo Amado (baritone and tenor) and Steve Adams (sopranino and tenor) are the main voices and they both solo extensively on each of their axes although bassist Ken Filiano sometimes takes solo honors. He and drummer Acacio Salero constantly challenge the horn players to play at their best. Since the first and last selections on this set have some melodic ideas in common and are among the more thoughtful pieces (at least in parts), they give this explorative set the feeling of a suite. Even at its most passionate and violent, this music is coherent and depends upon its success on the musicians constantly reacting to each other. A stimulating set. ~ Scott Yanow
