Marking its first release since parting ways with the major label world, MxPx's B-Movie pairs a DVD documentary with a five-song EP of favorites and new material recorded live in acoustic form. The footage, directed by Jeff Myers with the band, intertwines live footage from a series of surprise 2004 Seattle gigs, with road activity in Europe and Japan, studio work, and interviews with the trio's respective members as they participate in antics like smashing beer bottles with a baseball bat, walking their dogs, and hanging at home. But considering the band's 12-year history, it's kind of bothersome just how succinct -- at roughly 45 minutes -- the DVD piece is. Come to think of it, the CD portion seems a little light too, even if it does prove how well these lads thrive in the unplugged realm. Longtime favorites like "Invitation to Understanding" and "Quit Your Life" crackle with energy, and the brand new ode to optimism, "Grey Skies Turn Blue," sounds extremely promising. ~ John D.
