Chick Corea Quartet: Chick Corea (piano); Bob Berg (soprano & tenor saxophones); John Patitucci (acoustic bass); Gary Novak (drums). Recorded at Mad Hatter Studios (Studio A), Los Angeles, California. TIME WARP is based on a mystical allegory written by Chick Corea which is included as a short story in the CD booklet. "New Life" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition. Personnel: Chick Corea (piano); Bob Berg (saxophone); John Patitucci (acoustic bass); Gary Novak (drums). Audio Mixers: Chick Corea; Bernie Kirsh. Recording information: Mad Hatter Studios, Studio A, L.A., CA. Illustrator: Steve Ellis . Photographer: Karen Miller. Keyboardist-composer Chick Corea has appeared in so many manifestations over the past 25 years, it's almost impossible to nail him down stylistically. He played in any number of hot Latin and progressive bands in the '60s, joined Miles' next great quintet with Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette in 1968, moved on to record his famous trio NOW HE SINGS, NOW HE SOBS with Miroslav Vitous and Roy Haynes, formed the avant garde quartet Circle with Holland and Anthony Braxton in 1970 and the seminal fusion band Return To Forever with Stanley Clarke and Lenny White a couple of years later. Corea's recordings and live presentations since his initial breakthrough have gravitated between jazz, fusion and classical modes--usually segregated from each other stylistically. Thus we have a Chick Corea Elektrik Band and an Acoustik Band. With his latest quartet, Corea seems to have successfully integrated all his various musical personalities under one roof. More significantly, in concentrating on acoustic instruments, the music on TIME WARP portrays a sense of jazz interaction and emotional immediacy often lacking in past attempts to be all things to all persons. In a sense, TIME WARP is a return to Corea's roots, and the visceral rhythmic/harmonic stylings of his pre-fusion years. And while a Latin-flavored vehicle such as "Discovery," with its vamping, polyrhythmic groove, could easily accommodate a Return To Forever-styled interpretation, here the emphasis is on taut, controlled interplay, and subtle harmonic movement, as Corea and soprano saxophonist Bob Berg parry and thrust over the rolling rhythms of bassist John Patitucci and drummer Gary Novak. Likewise on "New Life," Corea crafts complex rhythm changes, but instead of turning them into an ornate technical excursion, he and the quartet attack the form with Coltraneish vigor and emotional commitment. There are also several acoustic piano motifs interspersed throughout the TIME WARP suite that reflect Corea's personal take on 20th Century harmony, and numerous moments of fervent group improvisation worth discovering again and again.
