Rodney Crowell first came to public attention in the mid-1970s as a member of Emmylou Harris's Hot Band, and as a songwriting contributor to her recordings, but eventually he became known as a performer in his own right. In the '80s, he was at the front lines of what some termed "progressive country," alongside the likes of Steve Earle and Rosanne Cash (to whom he was married for a while). Combining the influences of roadhouse rock & roll, traditional country, and poetic singer/songwriters like Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, Crowell fashioned distinctive, contemporary country songs that were adaptable to the needs of other performers (many have recorded his material) but still sounded unique when sung by the author.
THE ESSENTIAL RODNEY CROWELL delivers the kind of definitive career overview typical of this Columbia Legacy series, covering more than two decades of Crowell's career. From the mid-'80s rocker "Oh King Richard" to the Dylanesque 2003 plaint "Fate's Right Hand," we're treated to the full breadth of Crowell's craftsmanship. For the faithful who already own all the original albums, there are some special additions--newly recorded, powerfully poignant versions of two signature Crowell tunes ("I Ain't Living Long Like This" and "Til I Gain Control Again") are featured in newly recorded, previously unreleased versions.
