This two-hour-long all-region (NTSC) DVD is comprised of performances from the April 20, 2001, memorial concert for Steve Marriott at London's Astoria Theatre -- it's the perfect video accompaniment to Wapping Wharf Records' triple-CD live album of the same event, although the order of performances is different, this show opening up with the Mods (featuring Steve Ellis) rather than 17 Black performing Small Faces material. The camera is mobile and busy enough to keep the viewer more than occupied, and the audio is a match for the CD, with a slight advantage here in terms of capturing the introductions and other talk from the stage, when it occurs. Even the finer nuances, such as the subdued, lyrical opening on "Afterglow," are well captured, and the letterboxed image (two-to-one ratio) should look great on widescreen monitors. Each song gets a chapter marker and the disc also comes with a multi-layered menu (which opens with the sound selection, a choice of 5.1 surround or stereo) including several bonus features -- the first of those is a retrospective documentary on the memorial concert and how it developed into the massive event it turned out to be, including interviews with his bandmates Kenney Jones and Ian McLagan. In addition, "Beyond the Stage" captures the preparations and rehearsals for the performance, with lots of backstage views of the musicians, all set to Marriott's music from across his career. And as with the best DVDs of the 21st century, the audio is set at a good, loud level that might even force some viewers to turn down the volume. ~ Bruce Eder
