This deluxe 2004 edition of the Varese Sarabande soundtrack for The Cutting Edge augments the original 1992 release with the film's score, by noted composer and arranger Patrick Williams. Joining Joe Cocker's "Feel Like Forever" (the movie's theme song) are a mixed bag of tracks, including work from Nia Peebles ("Street of Dreams"), Rosemary Butler and John Townsend's "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over," and a solid slice of late-'80s hard rock in the Dan Reed Network's "Baby Now I." Williams' score reflects its era - "Battle of the CDs" begins with some blaring, hair metal-style guitar, and "Finale" and the opening "Ich Namen Gita/Olympic Hockey" make liberal use of synthesizers. There's also music paired to the film's skating routines ("Kate Skates Alone"; "Hoedown"; "Russians Skate"). Though The Cutting Edge wasn't exactly a hit, it was a solidly-made film that developed a cult following amongst figure skating enthusiasts. These listeners should enjoy this reissue immensely, from the expanded music offerings to the CD booklet, which includes promotional photos from the film and an essay with some interesting background (the storyline was based on Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew). ~ Johnny Loftus
