The original score to the film FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN, as realized by film composer Elliot Goldenthal, is an impressive mix of old-school, John Williams-style orchestral grandeur replete with swirling strings and epic themes, and modern, atmospheric music. When he delves into the latter, Goldenthal employs unusual bowing techniques and colorful percussion to evoke the cinematic action his themes accompany. Exploring the more conventional orchestral style, Goldenthal proves to be a steady hand at creating stirring, emotional soundscapes and harnessing the power of a full orchestra. The score is capped off by a couple of vocal tunes, perhaps most notably "The Dream Within," wherein estimable siren Laria Fabian adds her plentiful pipes to a soaring-yet-sensuous ballad whose rich tones favorably accent the instrumental themes that make up the bulk of this album.
