A collectors' dream -- albeit one that probably won't be played very often -- the Rock Generation series was the fruit of several vaults' worth of sessions organized by producer Giorgio Gomelski, in the years before he formed his own label, Marmalade. Originally released in the early to mid-'70s (that is, up to a decade after the tapes were recorded), the series allowed fans to catch some classic acts at the very dawn of their careers, and despite the fact that both the passage of time, and the grumblings of certain artists, have done much to lessen the albums' cachet, still there is no more precious an archive in British rock than this. Volume Ten delves into the prehistory of Julie Driscoll and Brian Auger by combining the three singles she recorded for Columbia, prior to teaming up with the Trinity (although they back her on all six songs), with a session that Auger taped with bluesman Sonny Boy Williamson at the end of his final U.K. visit. It's an awkward mix -- both sets of songs are better heard elsewhere, with the Williamson session available in full on the oft-reissued Don't Send Me No Flowers album. But still, released at a time when record companies simply didn't have a clue about the treasures that lay deleted in their vaults, Rock Generation served its purpose -- and, if you really want to set yourself a fun collecting challenge, try hunting down the full set. ~ Dave Thompson
