LULLABY, the 1987 release from the New York based Book Of Love, begins with a techno/dance jolt, and ends with the haunting strains of the nocturnal title track. In between it reveals the band's experimentation. Beginning with a remix of Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells (Theme From the Exorcist)" which crescendos into an ecstatic dance fest, the album segues into the band's Number One dance chart-topping "Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls," a song that was one of the first to address the AIDS crisis.
Also included is keyboard/vocalist's Ted Ottaviano's sunny, child-like "With a Little Love," sung in his sweet, Chet Baker-esque voice. "Witchcraft," with samples from the television show Bewitched, and featuring a roundup of witches and warlocks past and present, has a funky dance groove mixed with campy lyrics. A wonderful follow-up to the band's 1986 debut album, LULLABY still mines its electro-minimalist style to perfection.
