On it, they let loose with a jubilant, emotional sound that is the product of the intermingling of the musicans' polyrhythmic aspirations. The group creates a dazzling interplay of chattering guitar, keyboards, and tuned percussion that is seamless and uniquely African. They draw on their traditional Cameroonian roots as well as incorporating touches of American jazz and funk. It's hard to tell from the credits exactly who's singing at any given time, but the vocalists are each undeniably forceful and effective by turns both guttural and fluid. BIKUTSI ROCK should appeal to anyone whose ears and feet are willing to be lifted. Keep an eye out for guitar threat Roger Bekongo.
